week 4

Week 4 was great.  This week we went to Melbourne for a weekend trip.  Seeing a new city in the same country was a cool experience as they are very different.  Melbourne is a city which is difficult to fully experience in just two days, but we did our best.

We began with a walking tour of the city, and got to see the historic buildings and parks which define its past such as the original city jail and the royal exhibition centre.  The royal exhibition center is probably the most beautiful building I have seen in my time in Australia.  Built during the time just after the gold rush when the city was flush with wealth, it was used to house a world expo, and is one of two buildings remaining (the other being the eiffel tower) which remains today.  The City jail was also fascinating as we learned the story of Ned Kelly.

Ned Kelly was an outlaw robin hood esc figure who stole from the rich.  He was very popular for acts such as burning the mortgage papers of local farmers and wearing a crude suit of armor which protected him from bullets.  He died in prison after being hung with the famous last words, “such is life”, which is now a common phrase in Australia much like se la vie.

Overall it was a great weekend and i would love to go back given the chance!
