Stella Chang: Australia Week 7

I can’t believe we’re coming up to the last week of being in Australia. During this past week, i’ve been getting the last few things off my bucket list which has been centered around seeing new beaches and trying new restaurants.

On Wednesday, Sienna and I walked down to Blackwood again because Monday’s meal was just that good. Afterward, we found ourselves back at Harry’s, where I grabbed a smoothie. The weather was perfect, making for a gorgeous morning walk before class.

The week was relatively calm until Saturday when Maddie, Alexa, and I explored the Bondi and Glebe Markets. This time, I only left with a frangipani hair clip—a stark contrast from my first market trip, where I bought much more. Later, Lauren joined us for a trip to Manly Beach. We had dinner at Sunset Sabi, where we devoured the best maki roll ever, then capped off the evening by watching the sunset.

If you remember from last week’s blog, the first sommelier we met recommended Palm Beach, calling it the best in Sydney. The journey was about two hours, but we lengthened the trip by deciding to go for a 4km walk from Newport to Avalon Beach; unfortunately, it was all uphill. Newport Beach was quiet and had darker sand than the beaches near us, while Avalon reminded me of New Jersey with its lighter water. Unfortunately, the weather wasn’t in our favor by the time we arrived, so we didn’t swim, but it was beautiful nonetheless.

We hopped back on the bus to Whale Beach, which is connected to Dolphins Bay. Naturally, we found ourselves climbing yet another absurdly steep incline, but it was so worth it. We soaked up the last bits of sunlight and even got to experience a shark sighting alarm, which really made me feel like I’ve lived the full Australian experience.

Afterward, we took the bus to Barrenjoey Beach and then to The Joey for dinner, where we met the loveliest couple, Jane and Bruce. They shared their favorite spots in Sydney, and it was reassuring to hear that we had already visited most of them! We also told them about our upcoming trip to Singapore, and they were so excited for us. After they left, we enjoyed an amazing meal where Alexa and I split a pizza, and I had the most incredible tuna crudo. Our night ended with a walk along Palm Beach, where we spotted a working lighthouse, crabs, and rabbits.

Today, Maddie, Lauren, and I spent our last free Monday at Gordon’s Bay and Coogee Beach. It was windy, but still a great way to soak in our remaining time here. Later, we met up with Alexa and wandered through the Royal Botanic Gardens before ending the night with drinks at the Opera House Bar.

For the past few days, Alexa has been trying to get me into Bridgerton, only four short years after its first season premiered. These movie nights have been so much fun, and I’m excited to keep the tradition going in Singapore!
