After two incredible months studying abroad in Sydney, we wrapped up our semester with a week-long trip to Cairns. Our Sunday was dedicated to one of the world’s greatest natural wonders, the Great Barrier Reef. We got on a boat for an hour and a half and had the chance to snorkel and scuba dive. It was my first time scuba diving, and it couldn’t have been a better first experience. I went for two dives and a snorkel around three different reef locations. The underwater world was breathtaking, and marine life thrived in every part of the ocean. I got to put my hand over a giant clam and swim with different fishes, and even a reef shark swam by us. This experience was life-changing and is something I will never forget.
On Monday, we got on the bus after an early breakfast to explore the Atherton Tablelands. Our first stop was the infamous Devil’s Pool, where over 21 people have lost their lives due to its dangerous currents. The pool was surrounded by giant granite boulders and created a beautiful natural pool. From there, we headed to Mungalli Falls for a lunch next to a waterfall where aboriginal people used to wash off their wounds. Next, we visited Millaa Milla Falls which was my personal favorite of the day. We were able to swim all the up to the giant waterfall and relax behind the waterfall. Next, we visited Lake Eacham, a crystal-clear volcanic lake where we took another refreshing swim. To wrap up the day, we made a stop at the Curtain Fig Tree, and Peter Creek Walking Track to spot any tree kangaroos and platypuses. Unfortunately, we didn’t see any, but the beauty of the rainforest made the walk worthwhile.
