week 9

This week we made our transition from the beautiful tropical vacation world of Cairns Australia to the fast paced blazing hot city of Singapore for a 1 and a half month internship experience.  It’s sad to be leaving Australia, especially as those last few weeks were so great.  Cairns was an amazing experience and it was great to experience the best of what Australia has to offer.  The great barrier reef is incredible and Fitzroy island was one of the most beautiful places i have ever been, and skydiving was incredible.  Believe it or not, jumping out of a plane from 15000 feet will get your blood pumping.  The freefall was wild and the views were incredible.  I had the time of my life and would recommend it to any adrenaline junkie.

This week it was time to join the real world though, as we were thrown into the intense world of Singapore.  We arrived after a connecting flight in Papua New Guinea, on which they left our bags on the tarmac and our stuff got soaked.  Bag soakage aside the flight was fine, and there was no jet lag associated with the trip.  The hotel accommodation is nice with an outdoor pool and a tennis court.  Singapore is the cleanest city I have ever seen, which makes sense considering the fines for littering are very high.  It’s a very modern city with a fast paced feel.  One thing I will say has been annoying so far is that crosswalks are placed inconveniently.  Jaywalking just like littering is highly illegal and is subject to a large fine, additionally there are fences on sidewalks to keep you from jaywalking even if you didn’t care.  This means that most street crossing gets done underground which is similarly difficult as the subways are very confusing.  It feels as if half the city is above ground and half is below ground, which I think is very cool.  Overall it seems like a city I have a lot to learn about and I am excited for the coming weeks.
