Week 9 Blog – Cairns pt. 2 / Singapore Arrival

This week was filled with much travel and new experiences. Firstly, our second half of the spring break trip to Cairns commenced, where we travelled across all of Cairns, having an activity each day. Some of these highlights included scuba diving (which I touched on in my previous blog), a day trip to Fitzroy Island, a day trip to Crocodile Park, and a self-planned skydiving excursion. The trip to Fitzroy Island was one of the best experiences I’ve had, and was one of the closest times I have experienced “Paradise.” Upon our arrival, we were met with a hit of idleness, as the island was extremely empty. We hiked to Nakey Beach, a beach that was covered in seashells, where we spent hours snorkeling alongside the reefs. Though it was apparent that the reefs were shockingly bleached, which was a significant visual shift from the ornate reefs we saw in the Great Barrier Reef, I had finally seen marine life that I have been wanting to see since my arrival in Australia. From swimming above a 4-foot long white tip reef shark, swimming alongside numerous sea turtles, and hovering my hand above a live clam to make it shut, the interactions I had with marine life were truly unforgettable. At the end of the day, our GAV supervisor Paul, who has had much experience with Fitzroy Island, led me and a few buddies to jump off of the main dock, which was about 15 feet above the water. Though it was slightly daunting, as there were large hordes of fish right in our landing spot, as well as some jellyfish and a small shark, it was an unforgettable experience, as it was an experience that felt so serene and ethereal.

A second highlight of this week was our arrival in Singapore. Flying into the Singapore airport, which I have flown into before, I was immediately reminded of the futuristic and modernist culture that resides in Singapore. With many bright and vibrant lights, Singapore gives the feel of a city that never sleeps. Though I have not had significant time here in Singapore, so far I have tried my best to see the landmarks of the city as well as get a sense for the city. All in all, this city is truly remarkable and recognizable. The one downside, which I have been preparing for, is the extreme humidity. Regardless of the time of the day, the humidity is extremely prevalent. However, the one good thing that derives from the humidity is the amazing AC that Singapore utilizes. I am extremely excited to not only be here, but to immerse myself in the Singaporean culture and continue to travel not only around the city-state but around South-East Asia.
