Week 2 in Singapore – Matthew Lee

Orchard Road, Singapore at night.

Sentosa Island

This weekend, my family and I visited Sentosa Island, where we took the train from the Vivo City Mall to the island. Sentosa Island was pretty small, but after hearing the story of its origination, I found it quite interesting. In the 19th and 20th centuries, the British military used Sentosa Island as a fort to protect the country from sea attacks from the Japanese. After the war, Sentosa Island was transformed with attractions such as beaches, Universal Studios, resorts, and restaurants. I also learned that the beaches at Sentosa Island are man-made, which was fascinating. The island was beautiful and a fun place to visit for the day.

Gardens By the Bay

At night, we visited the Gardens by the bay at Marina Bay. The garden was lit up at night with a blue-ish, purple-ish color. It was cool being able to see the gardens in person, after seeing so many pictures of them online. We didn’t walk along the bridge in one of the gardens, but that is next up on my bucket list! This garden is extremely modernized, compared to a majority of the gardens in other areas of the world. I guess that is due to Singapore’s constant technological advancements, and they were able to show that off when creating these gardens. Also being to see Marina Bay Sands, the hotel, in the background was beautiful. The design of the hotel is really interesting, and I also want to go up to the top level to see the view from up there.

Lau Pa Sat

During the week, I got lunch at Lau Pa Sat with a fellow coworker. This hawker centre is the largest centre in Singapore, containing so many different options. I honestly got lost walking around looking at all the different cuisines. Lau Pa Sat had a circular design with restaurants also in the middle of the centre as well, which contributed to me getting lost while walking around. I think that Lau Pa Sat may be a slight tourist trap, however, because the prices were not as cheap as some of the other hawker centres I visited and the portions were smaller.

SDAX Week Two

This week at my internship, I continued working on reviewing financial statements. I was also tasked with creating multiple PowerPoint slide decks to present to board members and external organizations. I am excited to continue learning about the digital asset world and how it can be the future of finance. My favorite part of the SDAX group are the town hall meetings that they hold. During the town hall meetings, the leaders of the company come up to speak to everyone in the company and explain the direction the company is headed in. What makes this so special is that it makes everyone feel like they have a role in contributing the overall company’s success.
