🥊 A Ringside Invitation I Didn’t See Coming

This past week has been an absolute whirlwind—and honestly, I’ve never felt more excited (and slightly overwhelmed) in the best way possible.

Work has been busier than ever, but also weirdly exciting. I recently got pulled into a long-term project my company’s been working on—and it’s about this Australian company called Amaroo. They’re planning to create their own digital currency (like Bitcoin), and the team trusted me to write the concept paper.

When I first heard it, I was like, “Wait, what?” because I literally knew nothing about crypto, blockchain, or any of that techy stuff. I won’t lie—I was panicking at first. But I didn’t want to mess it up, so I went full nerd mode: I watched tons of explainer videos, read everything I could (even though I barely understood half of it at first), and slowly things started making sense. And surprisingly… my supervisor was happy with what I came up with 🙏.

That moment of “oh no” turning into “I actually did that” felt really good. On top of all that, I was also helping with financial projections for one of our clients—which was a whole other kind of brain workout. I was super involved this week, and even though I’m kinda exhausted, I also feel weirdly proud.

Now, outside of work, I’m a foodie, so of course I couldn’t resist squeezing in some café hopping. This week, I went to Joo Chiat with some friends (aka the place with those cute rainbow-colored houses you always see on IG). We started the day with coffee from this adorable little shop where you order through a tiny window. An old lady passed us the drinks from behind the window—it was the cutest thing ever. Then we hit up another café that’s known for its Japanese sando (so soft, so fluffy, so good).

We wanted to go to Ann Siang Hill after that, but of course—Singapore weather being Singapore weather—it started pouring like crazy. We only had two umbrellas to share between all of us, so we ended up exploring the little local shops nearby instead. One that really stood out to me was this Japanese-themed CD and cassette shop—total throwback vibes. They had everything from 80s classics to newer artists like Rosé from BLACKPINK. I bought a CD for my sister and grabbed some super cute postcards with Joo Chiat illustrations on them (I couldn’t help myself).

One of the most unexpected—and honestly, most exciting—moments of my week happened when our CFO extended an invitation to the entire company to attend a boxing event organized by his own boxing organization. The event was held at none other than Marquee at Marina Bay Sands, one of the most iconic venues in Singapore. I was genuinely surprised by the invitation, especially because my initial involvement with the event was purely behind the scenes. I had helped design the event posters and created the auction slides, so I assumed I’d just be contributing quietly from the background. Never in a did I expect to be invited to attend the event in person!

To be honest, I had never watched a live boxing match before, and I wasn’t quite sure what to expect. I imagined it might be intense or even a little overwhelming—but it turned out to be the complete opposite. The atmosphere was electric, but in a very enjoyable way. The audience was lively, the event was well-organized, and the matches themselves were surprisingly engaging. What stood out to me even more, though, was the opportunity to connect with colleagues outside of the usual office setting. Throughout the night, I found myself chatting and laughing with coworkers I usually only exchange emails or polite hallway greetings with. It was refreshing to share food, conversations, and reactions with everyone in such a relaxed and energetic environment. There was also an auction segment during the evening, and I couldn’t help but feel like a bit of an insider since I already knew all the items being presented (perks of making the slides, I guess!).

Looking around the venue—between the bright lights, the crowd, and the ring—I had a moment where I just felt grateful. Grateful for the unexpected invitation, for the experiences I got to be part of, and for how much I’ve grown recently, both professionally and personally. It was such a memorable experience, one that I honestly never imagined myself enjoying so much. I left that night with a full heart, a clearer mind, and a strong sense of appreciation for the people I work with. I’m ending the week on such a high note and now, I’m looking forward to our upcoming trip to Bintan.
