Week 5 in Singapore – Matthew Lee

During this week, I did a lot of sightseeing all around Singapore. On Thursday night, I went to watch the sunset at East Coast Park. Then on Friday night, I went up to the Pinnacle Skybridge to watch the sunset over the city skyline. Lastly on Saturday, I went to the Jurong Lake Gardens to see the Chinese and Japanese Gardens.

Pinnacle Skybridge

Seeing the sunset from the Pinnacle Skybridge was truly amazing. Here in Singapore, it’s not too often when we get a nice sunset, mostly because it’s either rainy or cloudy. So, when I saw it was sunny out, I had to take advantage of the opportunity and go watch the sunset on the 50th floor of Pinnacle @ Duxton. When I first stepped outside from the elevator, my jaw dropped at the skyline of the city with the orange and pink sky in the background. Seeing the city skyline, along with all of the skyscrapers, really makes you appreciate the places you are in life. This semester is flying by, so it’s nice to sometimes take a moment and look around at the beauty surrounding you. It was nice being able to see all the different parts of Singapore from above, including the ports and skyscrapers.

Jurong Lake Gardens

Visiting the Chinese and Japanese Gardens at the Jurong Lake Gardens has been one of my favorite parts of Singapore thus far. The gardens were about an hour total commute away, but after walking around and seeing all the beautiful monuments and historic buildings, it was definitely worth the long MRT ride. My personal favorite part of the gardens was the Sunken Garden, which I saw online and immediately decided I wanted to see it in person. I also really enjoyed seeing the Cloud Pagoda, the water lilies, and the bonsai garden. Walking around the gardens was extremely peaceful and quiet, perfect for clearing the mind and appreciating the nature around them. The gardens reminded me a lot of traditional Chinese and Japanese landscaping styles. It’s crazy to think that just a few kilometers away, there is a bustling city filled with people walking up and down the streets. The contrast between peaceful escapes and busy streets is what I admire about Singapore because it has the best of both worlds.
