I’ve only been here for one week and it feels as though I’ve been here for several months. The first thing I noticed is how active and fit everyone is. A runner passes you here, a cyclist passes you there. It’s a nice adjustment from the sedentary lifestyle of parts of America. My roommate Trev and I joined a gym and it is unbelievable. Everyone is up at 7 am going hard working out and it’s not just young people, it’s all age groups. My step count has gone through the roof and I think my total in one day even got up to 24,500, which is insane.
The views are insane and the beaches are absolutely beautiful. I cannot lie I haven’t put a lick of sunscreen on since being here and future me you are either paying for it or not, but the tan looks sick. I’ve seen so many new things and experienced so much in one week that it’s hard to fathom I get to do this for another 7 weeks. We went sightseeing, watched a professional soccer match, saw live music at a pub, saw the local animals (the most interesting being a “bin chicken”, cooked dinner with friends, and more. Yet my favorite part was learning how to crack a whip. I learned that I have a knack for cracking a whip and I got it super fast and it was really loud. Soon I was doing it with both hands and the instructor was really impressed with me. That made my week!
Classes are alright. Sitting in a room for 3 hours is ok but I’ve learned some really interesting stuff about Australian history. When I landed here I really didn’t see much rich history like Europeans and Americans have. There was mostly food and things influenced by foreign countries, but I’ve come to learn that their history is very deep and that the natives have been unfortunately phased out of society due to colonization and that most early settlers were prisoners from britain. Now most of the people here immigrated from another country.
All in all I’ve loved my first week here and i’m incredibly excited for the upcoming ones!
