Week 5 brought me my second set of classes, a few funny failures, and a great experience touring the Sydney Opera House
During this block, I am taking international finance and international marketing. So far, I have been enjoying both classes but can already tell that they will be closer to the rigorous courses I have back on campus than the lighter workload of the first four weeks. In international finance, I definitely feel somewhat out of my element being one of two non-finance or accounting majors in the class. Thankfully, since most of my apartment is in the class, I imagine I will be able to get any extra help that I may need over these next few weeks. International marketing has been an interesting surprise through its first few classes. Instead of focusing more on brands, we have been spending our time understanding the general business landscape so far. We have had a few in-class case studies which I have enjoyed, but I am definitely hoping it becomes more focused on traditional marketing concepts in a global setting.
Friday was Valentine’s Day which served as a good excuse for a few of us guys to get together and find something to do. We ultimately decided to try and go out but left just a little too late in the evening and missed most of the exciting opportunities that we initially were planning. We ultimately ended up at a pub watching Rugby and made plans to try again the next night. When the time came, we left early, had our plans concrete, but then as we walked up to the venue, realized that they were only open on Friday nights. With that said, next week, Tomy, Dylan, Dom, and I have tentative plans to finally make it out.
Rewinding to earlier in the day on Saturday, I spent my morning applying for more internships and initially planned to have a quieter day. As the day progressed though, I began to get bored so after a quick trip to the gym with Tomy, I decided to bring my book to Bondi and read for a few hours as the UV was going down. While somewhat funny, I enjoyed my time and ended up having a more social night.
Sunday was probably the most eventful day of the week. We began the day with a tour of the Sydney Opera House which was very cool to see from an expanded historical perspective than we had on the walking tour of the rocks. My favorite fact that I learned was that the sails were designed as full circles first before being “cut” into smaller parts to give the opera house sails their shapes. The tour made me want to see a show even more than I had but have had some trouble finding other people on the trip who also want to go see a show.

After the tour we had one other small failure where a group of us Bucknellians set out to find 42 Wallaby Way since we had seen it was on Google Maps. After walking 20 minutes from the Opera House, we realized that while there is a Google Maps location, the street and address don’t actually exist. While we couldn’t find Nemo, we tried our best and have a funny story to show for it.

Jackson – if you can’t find anyone to go see a show at the Sydney Opera House, go by yourself! You’ll still have a great time – and you won’t regret later that you held yourself back from the experience because nobody else wanted to seize the opportunity. Do it! xoxo, Aunt Suz
