Abroad in Australia: Week 9

Spring Break

On our first day of Spring Break we took a boat out to the Great Barrier Reef. Once there we stopped along three different points to get in the water and go snorkeling. It was so beautiful. I saw various types of fish, corals, and even some reef sharks. I felt like I was in a live action finding nemo.

The next day we went on a bus tour of some beautiful nature spots in Cairns. We stopped at waterfalls, swimming holes, and a giant fig tree that inspired the tree from Avatar. We spent the day swimming and exploring the different locations.

The following day we went to a Crocodile farm and zoo. We took a boat ride into the Crocodiles’ swamp and interacted with them. We then explored the zoo and got to see some cool reptiles, birds and koalas. We ended our day by watching back to back snake and crocodile shows.

Then we went and spent the day at Fitzroy Island. We took a hike up to a Nuddie beach (don’t worry everyone was clothed) which was voted one of the most beautiful beaches in Australia. Instead of sand the ground was covered in coral and the water was so clear I could look down and see my toes in neck high water. We headed back for lunch and then it started to rain so we spent the rest of the day under the pavilion playing cards.

After a few days we spent the next relaxing day at Palm Cove. We laid on the beach and napped and tanned. I went for a long walk along the water and I found a bunch of pieces of sea glass and some fun shells. Then, we ended the night at a restaurant by the water where I got Beef Tataki.

For our last day in Cairns it was raining. So we went to the markets in the morning and grabbed lunch there. After lunch we explored a few of the local shops and then went to the Cairns aquarium where we got to learn all about different marine life in Australia.
