Week 1 in Singapore and Thailand – Jonah Pachman

Week 1 at Qapita

We spent our first week in Singapore this past week, and I got started interning at my new company. My firm is called Qapita, and it is effectively a private equity management software company that offers multiple services including consulting. I am working with another member of the GAV program, not from Bucknell. I really enjoyed meeting all my new colleagues and getting to know them over the past week. Additionally, I really like my office and the building where I work. It is located next to a huge hawker center, which I have gone to every day for lunch since arriving. I have had food ranging from duck to noodles to fried rice, and it has all been incredible. The best part is the cost is so low, I have not paid more than five united states dollars for anything at that market. Commuting to work is also very easy, as it is only five or so stops on the train and a five or so minute walk from there. The total time is around twenty minutes, which is not bad at all given the amount of office buildings the city has to offer.

Thailand

Moving onto the weekend, John and I traveled to Phuket, Thailand on Friday night. We spent the weekend there, most notably seeing the Phi Phi Islands on Saturday. The scenery was beautiful, and it was a must-visit place for me. Also, the food was incredible, especially the Thai buffet lunch we had during our boat trip. The Pad Thai was some of the best I had ever had and was much different from what I was used to back in the United States. It was super cool to see the country, and I am happy to say I have been.

Changi Airport

Another point I wanted to reflect on was the Singapore Changi Airport. This place does not feel like an airport, more like an amusement park or massive mall. There is everything one could ever want, and pretty much every chain store imaginable. On our flight out on Friday, I stopped at the food court, expecting it to be like every other airport food spot I had been to in my life, full of fast food and overpriced items. However, it was much more than that, providing every type of Asian cuisine possible, and the food I got was incredible. The gyoza was some of the best I had ever tried, and the noodles were amazing as well. We are heading off to Bali on Friday, and I am very much so looking forward to exploring the airport even more.
