There are weeks when nothing seems to go as planned. You wake up hopeful, armed with a long to-do list and a heart full of expectations—only to be met with delays, cancellations, and a pile of uncertainty. This past week was one of those times for me. I had plans—solid, carefully thought-out plans—and yet, plan A, B, and even C all crumbled. But instead of allowing the frustration to swallow me whole, I learned something valuable: when things don’t go as planned, maybe it’s life gently nudging you to pause, breathe, and take a break.

Initially, I felt overwhelmed. The constant uncertainty was exhausting. I was drowning in “what-ifs” and questions about why things weren’t falling into place. But after sitting with disappointment for a moment, I decided to do something different. I chose to be happy. If my original plans didn’t work, I could at least try something new, even if that meant simply finding joy in small adventures. And so, I gave myself permission to explore. Being in Singapore—a city that beautifully blends modern luxury with rich culture—I had plenty of places to visit and experiences to discover. I turned my attention to things that I’ve always wanted to do but never found the time for.
I wandered through some of Singapore’s iconic shopping malls, allowing myself to window shop at designer stores like Louis Vuitton and Gucci. Walking through those elegant spaces, soaking in the fashion and aesthetics, felt like a mini escape from the stress clouding my mind. I wasn’t necessarily shopping to buy—I was shopping to breathe, to find inspiration in beauty, and to remind myself that life is bigger than this one bad week.

I also treated myself to some much-needed self-care. I got myself a lot of perfumes. Anyone who knows me, knows that I love fragrance and it helps change my mood quickly. I visited Newton Food Centre—yes, the same one that featured in Crazy Rich Asians—and indulged in delicious local dishes. Sitting among people, savoring flavors that burst with culture and warmth, reminded me how comforting simple pleasures can be. I have never had stingy rays so I ordered that as my special meal and as a non alcoholic person, I have found my best drink in Singapore, the sugar cane juice mixed with lemon. I explored the vibrant scenes at the Aquarium, letting the quiet rhythm of swimming sea creatures and the background music soothe my busy thoughts. And I ended the day laughing and dining with friends—something that always helps reset my mood and perspective.

Through it all, I realized that while it’s easy to spiral when things fall apart, you also have the choice to slow down and nurture your peace. Sometimes life doesn’t need you to push harder—it needs you to rest better. It needs you to listen to your soul whispering, “Let’s try something else. Let’s do something new.” Trying new habits—like spontaneous adventures, solo date days, cooking, or just taking the pressure off—can be the start of something transformative. A failed plan might feel like a door slammed shut, but it often opens a window to something unexpected and beautiful.
So if your week has been gloomy and nothing seems to go your way, take heart. Don’t force yourself to keep running toward plans that aren’t working. Instead, pause. Explore. Go to that café you always pass by. Watch the sunset. Reconnect with an old friend. Treat yourself to a new experience. Sometimes the detour is exactly what you need.

Remember, when plans fall through, it doesn’t mean you’ve failed. It could simply mean you’re being led to something better—something softer, slower, and unexpectedly joyful.
