Final Blog in Singapore – Matthew Lee

As we come towards the end of this trip, I wanted to use this final blog to highlight some of my favorite experiences during the program. Studying abroad in the Asia Pacific has opened my eyes to so many different cultures and amazing places on the other side of the world. Prior to this program, I had really only been to one place in the Asia-Pacific, Hong Kong. But during my time here, I have been able to see so many other countries, aside from Australia and Singapore, including New Zealand and Indonesia; and I still plan on travelling to […]

Week 5 in Singapore – Matthew Lee

During this week, I did a lot of sightseeing all around Singapore. On Thursday night, I went to watch the sunset at East Coast Park. Then on Friday night, I went up to the Pinnacle Skybridge to watch the sunset over the city skyline. Lastly on Saturday, I went to the Jurong Lake Gardens to see the Chinese and Japanese Gardens. Pinnacle Skybridge Seeing the sunset from the Pinnacle Skybridge was truly amazing. Here in Singapore, it’s not too often when we get a nice sunset, mostly because it’s either rainy or cloudy. So, when I saw it was sunny […]

Week 4 in Singapore – Matthew Lee

Singaporean Cooking Class This weekend, Bucknell students had the opportunity to learn to cook a Singaporean dish called, Laksa. Laksa is a type of soup noodle with a spicy broth and other toppings such as: fish cakes, egg, fried tofu, and prawns. Learning how to make this dish was more complicated than it seemed to the eye initially. There were a lot of meticulous steps that needed to be taken. To make the broth, we had to cut up peppers and other vegetables and then combine it with spices. When everything was mixed together, we had to use a mortar […]

Week 3 in Singapore – Matthew Lee

This weekend, I took a trip to Bali, Indonesia, which was my first time travelling outside of Singapore in Southeast Asia. Bali was absolutely beautiful, filled with beaches and temples. However, Bali was a clear black and white difference from Singapore. The streets of Bali were flooded with reckless car and motorcycle drivers and most of the houses were slums. But the water at the beaches was some of the clearest water I have ever seen. During our stay, the country of Indonesia was observing the holiday, Nyepi, which is the Indonesian Day of Silence. Nyepi is a holiday that […]

Week 2 in Singapore – Matthew Lee

Sentosa Island This weekend, my family and I visited Sentosa Island, where we took the train from the Vivo City Mall to the island. Sentosa Island was pretty small, but after hearing the story of its origination, I found it quite interesting. In the 19th and 20th centuries, the British military used Sentosa Island as a fort to protect the country from sea attacks from the Japanese. After the war, Sentosa Island was transformed with attractions such as beaches, Universal Studios, resorts, and restaurants. I also learned that the beaches at Sentosa Island are man-made, which was fascinating. The island […]

Week 1 in Singapore – Matthew Lee

As we leave Australia for good this week and transition to living in Singapore, I wanted to emphasize how amazing it was living in Australia for the past nine weeks. I loved the atmosphere in Sydney and being able to adventure to so many different places in the city and around the country. During this past week in Cairns, we went to Hartley’s Crocodile Adventure and Fitzroy Island to wrap up spring break. Hartley’s Crocodile Adventure At Hartley’s Crocodile Adventure, we saw a lot of crocodiles and other reptiles and animals, and we learned how they farm the crocodiles. Going […]
