From Thai Town to PILATES to Not Finding Nemo: My Fifth Week Down Under

Thai Town  This week kicked off the start of the second block of classes: Contemporary Politics and International Marketing. While I’ve only had three classes each, my socks are blown off, especially for contemporary politics. The instructor, Aim, is amazing. She’s originally from Thailand and received an academic scholarship that allowed her to study in the States, and it seems she’s been everywhere since then. Our first lesson was centered around food because she believes that food is just a large part of understanding a culture, and culture comes from history. To understand today, you need to know the evolution […]

From Block One Done to Melbourne Weekend: My Fourth Week Down Under

Welcome back, mates! I’ve been in Sydney for over a month now. This week was very academic, as our first block of classes ended on Friday, but the weekend was a great getaway to Melbourne—a perfect reset before Block 2 classes. Block One Done I have now completed Business Law and Australian Life and Culture, two drastically different courses. Business Law was fascinating because it was logical and highly detail-oriented. It gave me a solid foundation for understanding the right questions to ask and showed me just how vast the law truly is. In my Australian Life and Culture course, […]

From Foodie Adventures to Beachside Explorations: My Third Week Down Under

Welcome back! I’ve just concluded my third week down under, and I can’t believe how fast time passes. here This week was packed with adventure, but in hindsight, it was a foodie-friendly one where I also took time to slow down and appreciate Australia’s culture and beauty. Foodie Adventures  I have to be honest, Australia has fantastic food. The best sourdough bread I’ve ever had is casually sold at the supermarket. There are so many gems that you won’t be disappointed with the food everywhere you go. On Tuesday, we went to a restaurant Ariana discovered from TikTok offering a […]

From Brand Loyalty to Sunburns: My Second Week Down Under

Brand Loyalty: A New Perspective   During my second week in Australia, I found myself fixated on an unexpected theme: where are my favorite brands? As a MIDE student, I’ve learned the power of brand loyalty, but here I was as a consumer searching to find my favorite brands in the stores. For instance, after several trips to local chemists and supermarkets, I realized I couldn’t find Crest toothpaste anywhere. While it may seem trivial, I’ve never had to think about toothpaste before—Crest was always there. Now, I’ve had to settle for Colgate, but the moment I land back in the […]

Alexa’s Passport Diaries: My First Week Down Under

From Social Norms to Koala Encounters Adapting to Social Norms  G’day (that’s Australian slang for hello)! I have just completed my first whole week in Sydney, Australia, and I’m convinced that time moves slower here (but in a good way). Upon arrival, I fell ill, which made for a rocky start, but I’ve still managed to see and do so much quickly. My first significant conquest of the week was finding food and exploring the Westfield Mall. I quickly realized that it was no secret that I was an American. The most significant social norm that I faced was that […]
